On another note, I've been wondering how much digital TV protocols themselves can be used to track individual viewers. Some stations have prompted me to accept their privacy policy (via a "red button" interface) where they also mention cookies (on the TV iirc).
Most of us probably know a lot about about protocol families like the web and TCP/IP but digital television and radio seem to be a bit overlooked. Does anyone have any pointers to good learning resources around DVB, DAB and the like?
- gruez 6y agoTerrestrial TV and radio are probably safe from tracking. The set-top boxes that the cable/satellite company gives you... not so much.
- t0astbread 6y agoOk, why do you think this is the case?
- gruez 6y agoBecause terrestrial TV and radios are strictly receive-only devices, whereas cable/satellite set-top boxes are connected to the provider's network (otherwise you can't get VOD or PPV, for instance). I guess it's possible for you to buy a receiver that's IOT enabled and phones home, but that'd be a conscious decision on your part.
