Show HN: A curated collection of special locations in Google Street View
- kirchhoff 6y agoThere are some interesting, lesser known locations on Google Street View which I thought would be interesting to stroll around (virtually) during these times. For example, one of my favourites is Battleship Island, an abandoned Japanese island which is being slowly taken back by nature. https://streetviews.earth/@hashima-coal-mine-battleship-island-6317 https://streetviews.earth/@hashima-coal-mine-battleship-isla...
- johnchristopher 6y agoHow did the Google car get there? Or was it that backpacking Google camera from a few years ago?
- jellevdv 6y agoI think it's a user-submitted 360 photo
- lefrenchy 6y agoDo you know how many there are? I could scroll through this forever...
- kirchhoff 6y agoThere are (currently) several thousand views, though I'm adding more!
- fireattack 6y agoThank you for this site. When Google Maps just came out and blew everyone's mind with their satellite imagery, there are plenty of online communities that focused on finding interesting spots on GMaps, and I was obsessed. Unfortunately, these communities eventually died out and I never find something similar (admittedly I didn't look too hard, so open to recommendations of similar sites). This is https://www.reddit.com/r/googlemapsshenanigans/ https://www.reddit.com/r/googlemapsshenanigans/ , but I feel it's way too low effort (almost nothing educational posted, people often just post the screenshot without coordinates and links, no real discussion etc.). As for your awesome site, I wish there are more descriptions (some only have a title).
- kirchhoff 6y agoI also enjoy looking for interesting spots on Google Maps. I actually run another site [1] which is similar to this one, but dedicated to satellite imagery, and which lets you submit interesting views. It doesn't have a great deal of traffic but I do get a dozen or so submissions per day! [1] https://random.earth https://random.earth
- diggernet 6y agoLove it. Thanks. Just one suggestion: How about a small overview map (perhaps zoomable) in one corner, so we can see where in the world we are?
- kirchhoff 6y agoThanks for the suggestion. I might put a small 3d globe in with a marker. You can also click the Google logo at the bottom left to see the location on Google Maps.
- joncp 6y agoLove it! Another fun one is https://randomstreetview.com/ https://randomstreetview.com/ . I've traveled the world multiple times over with that site.
- mncharity 6y agoIssue: On this page[1], the view is black. When reached via PREV or NEXT, the preceding view remains, sometimes reoriented, though the text changes. - kirchhoff 6y agoThanks for spotting that, I've fixed it now.
- a-bedford 6y agoI like the concept, well done. A suggestion would be to add some kind of filtering capability (e.g., see only landscapes, historical sites).
- kirchhoff 6y agoThanks for the suggestion. I tried to keep it as simple as possible, but I suppose a filter wouldn't add too much clutter.
