This isn’t a typical FT article, more like a well-written but anecdotal and self-absorbed blog post. The author lost my sympathy when he stated he visited America first when his father was on sabbatical to Stanford in the 1980s. He is oblivious to the bubble in which he lives, extrapolating his experience as a child of privilege and current FT writer to all of America and all of Europe. Blog post.
To recalibrate what America has meant to Europe over the years, here’s the verse at the base of the Statue of Liberty:
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
If Europe is no longer poor, huddled, wretched or homeless, then why come indeed. I remember a quote in the early glow of globalization in the 1980s when a real journalist asked a young Italian about his future in Italy, and his response was “America è qui’. In the 1980s.
