Suga politically rejects 6 new science council members. No more Academic freedom
- totetsu 6y agoThe asahi article explains more https://www.asahi.com/articles/ASNB14CDTNB1UTIL01F.html?iref=comtop_7_02 https://www.asahi.com/articles/ASNB14CDTNB1UTIL01F.html?iref... (Japanese). The council is an independent body that makes policy recommendations. Since 2004 the council has recommended new members and the prime minister has confirmed them. This time of the recommended 105, just 99 were confirmed. One of the unappointed university professors has opposed security legislation and conspiracy legislation. Things like this, and the withdraw of funding and censorship of the Aichi Triennale for including art critical of national issues, have Japanese Academics gravely concerned over the future of Academic freedom, and free society in Japan.
- fomine3 6y agoIt's definitely bad move but IMO "No more Academic freedom" is too much. In different view, The Science Council of Japan denies research that relates military. I don't know whether it's good or bad but it seems that the org not aiming completely freedom. http://www.scj.go.jp/ja/info/kohyo/pdf/kohyo-23-s243-en.pdf http://www.scj.go.jp/ja/info/kohyo/pdf/kohyo-23-s243-en.pdf
