That was my initial take, especially given Gruber’s consistently pro-Apple stance, but I think it’s intended as the exact opposite. That post was preceded by one where he was expressing disgust at the inept management of the App Store—in this case, a blatant rip-off of a popular app that Apple should have caught and didn’t.
Gruber has been frustrated by Apple’s poor management of the App Store for a while now, so I think his point as far as Marina Bay was: they’ll spend millions making their physical stores pretty, but they don’t seem to give a damn about one of their most important digital ones.

I could agree if not for the sentences that precede the one I quoted: > This is nonsense. Apple is not cheap. A miserly penny-wise/pound-foolish company does not design and build architectural marvels like this new store in Singapore. I see those comments as unambiguous praise. The line on spending lavishly follows right after, in the same paragraph. Gruber tends to link to his older posts when making a reference. He didn’t in this case, which makes me think he meant it as he wrote it.
