I have a dislike of the idea that people with a disbility who band together for social and emotional support have a right to inflict their disability upon others who may otherwise be spared. I see it in deaf societies who want to ban hearing aids or cochlear implants. Are there other groups, like amputees who want to ban prosthetic limbs? Or blind people who want to block vision acquisition or restoration research? I believe we need to work to restore people to as close to normal functionality as possible, so they can become part of the larger society. That said, all possible assistance should be given to people with these various disbilities.
