The way you state this, you make it seem as though people go to only one news outlet for their information. If this is the case I agree with you that news outlets have a responsibility to ensure their algos are as unbiased as possible.
However....
If people only go to one outlet for their source of news then that mistake is on them. Their choice to select Facebook for example for their primary source of news intelligence, is frankly frighteningly ignorant, especially after countless stories about FB have come out over the years showing how they manipulate their algos.
It's like people only going to CNN for their news. Most people know that news outlets like CNN are biased and report false information sometimes (eg Russian election conspiracy).
A.I isn't the problem in my opinion. The problem is our creeping reliance on A.I to solve our inherent laziness. What I mean is that instead of DYOR on a topic, which may entail actual research from different sources and different points of view and then making up our own mind on the subject, we rely on being bottle fed biased opinions about subjects from questionable sources without the need to think, only to react.
Humanity has a great talent for creating more problems that result in the suffering and misery of people.
