I have a suggestion for Tails to help make it even more secure. Whether they listen and implement is another thing.
Encrypted Persistence
Why is there no option to create an encrypted persistence on Tails?
My suggestion is that in the installation option, when you create an instance on another USB, there should be an encrypted persistence option.
I understand that this may not be easy, as creating persistent storage on a USB in linux is not straight forward, but this task can be completely automated by the Tails team and hidden from users.
- GekkePrutser 6y agoBut persistence would undermine the anonymity by carrying over cookies and other files that can be used to connect a user's different sessions. I think this is why it's not being offered.
- HashingtheCode 6y agohence I said ENCRYPTED persistence
- GekkePrutser 6y agoI know but that doesn't make a difference. What I mean is browser cookies, canvas id etc that will remain and can be used to track the user between sessions. Currently all tails sessions are pretty much the same because they're all fresh sessions every time you use them.
- HashingtheCode 6y agoI get it, we can all be tracked in ways when we are online unless we take extreme precautions like using TOR browser etc. That is something else. See my needs, what i want, is a portable encrypted Tails instance. I can do things that minimize my cookies/footprint inside, like using TOR, like using a virtualbox inside, using Matrix extensions etc etc.... But my primary need is an encrypted persistence with Tails and that is something they just don't provide. I can't use it as a day-day driver as I always need to setup everything from scratch. I might as well just burn a linux distro to a usb and use that in its place. What would set Tails apart is providing more flexibility.
