If enough people do it, they gain independence (India, Poland) or civil rights MLK. And because those protests are non-violent, and almost always the protestors suffer. They get the moral high-ground and people believing in cause rally around the protest and not extremist who want to burn down something. Imagine any example I gave was a violent protest ending up as bloody conflict. How would any of them end up?
