This report is deceptive. It uses phrases like "voter suppression", which bring to mind tactics like making Black voters think they will be assaulted by white supremicists if they show up to vote, or giving Black voters incorrect information about where the polling stations are located.
But when you get to the details, that's not at all what they say the Trump campaign did. They say that - shocking, I know! - the Trump campaign criticized Hillary Clinton.
That's it. The "suppression" comes about when a Black voter doesn't like Trump, and won't vote for him, but has been convinced by the Trump campaign that Hillary Clinton is also terrible, so they won't vote for her either.
Sounds like totally normal politics to me.
- hactually 6y agoVoter suppression is a strategy used to influence the outcome of an election by discouraging or preventing specific groups of people from voting. Looks like a perfect definition match.
- radford-neal 6y agoThere's a BIG difference between discouraging people from voting by threatening to beat them up if they do, and discouraging them from voting by convincing them that none of the candidates are any good. The former is criminal. The later is normal politics. Conflating the two is deceptive.
- hactually 6y agoDisagree. It's literally the definition of the term.
- radford-neal 6y agoBut if that's your definition of "voter suppression", then there's nothing at all wrong with it.
