To me the bummer of nuclear power is how much advocates try to underestimate the cost of handling the waste for decades and the potential risks.
I think if you really think we need to go full speed ahead with nuclear power you need to ask how close a waste deposit to your home are you comfortable with? Often times these things just get transported to supposedly remote places which just mean a more vulnerable community may be exposed to the long term risks.
- Consultant32452 6y agoModern nuclear power plants use waste from previous generation nuclear power plants as their fuel.
- Balgair 6y agoDoesn't that then make it easier to get to the bomb?
- AngryData 6y agoThe limit to producing nukes now is mostly energy requirements. Nuclear chemistry is not a secret and anybody can go to school for it. The limitation is the massive energy requirements to actually purify the materials to such high grades. The Manhattan project used 10% of the US total electrical generation capacity.
- Balgair 6y agoSo then yes, it would be easier
- pfdietz 6y agoNo, they don't, in most cases. And when they do (MOX fuel in some thermal reactors) it's a net economic loss. MOX fuel is difficult to fabricate; the Pu used has negative value compared to just using fresh enriched uranium.
