Ask HN: Tips/Resources for getting users involved after signup?

Background: I'm currently working on a consumer web app. It seems that one of the most critical points in user acquisition/retention for a web app would be immediately after the user has signed up, but hasn't yet begun to use the app. Do any of you have resources or tips on how to help users get over that initial hump?
