Noam Chomsky: The world is at the most dangerous moment in human history
- silexia 6y agoThe dictators of the world are using the strategy divide and conquer to destroy democracies.
- smartbit 6y agoHere the start of the interview with Noam Chomsky https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIZTQW8gQV0&list=PLsR05wo5NygpEt1ZKki-4qGI20SMlQ4Gt&t=165 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIZTQW8gQV0&list=PLsR05wo5Ny... Interesting to see that progressive.international depends on youtube for distribution of their video material, unlike media.ccc.de or video.fosdem.org who host their own videos and use youtube as (sort of) a backup.
- bryan0 6y agoUnfortunately this might be true for the foreseeable future because of increasing technology and independent of politics. Nick Bostrom writes about this in "The Vulnerable World Hypothesis" (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/1758-5899.12718 https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/1758-5899.1...)
- buffaloo 6y agoSensationalism. There’s always danger. There’s always opportunity. Now is no different.
- EForEndeavour 6y agoIn the article, Noam Chomsky references the climate crisis, the risk of nuclear war, and the rise of authoritarianism. Are you saying you believe that current conditions are actually no more dangerous to organized human life on earth as any other point in history? What's your counterargument?
- buffaloo 6y agoWe’ve had all that my whole life. Buck up.
- RickJWagner 6y agoIt's laughable that Chomsky seems to see danger from the more peaceful political elements. Those rioting and looting he simply overlooks.
- smegcicle 6y agoright-wing authoritarianism is the threat; real left-wing authoritarianism has never been tried, but would surely approximate utopia
- sleepysysadmin 6y agoI listened to lots of Chomsky back in the day but nothing more recently. Because of this older article I listened to some of his recent stuff. It's interesting. This article isn't sensationalized relative to Chomsky's position. He genuinely believes that climate change and the inaction from the republicans is tantamount to an existential threat. That inaction on climate change is actually worse than the holocaust. He was ~15-20 years old during world war 2. Maybe he's right? I was not alive during world war 2. I am alive right now I certainly do not agree that climate change is a doomsday scenario at all.
- EForEndeavour 6y ago> I certainly do not agree that climate change is a doomsday scenario at all. What evidence supports the extremely high confidence of this belief? In other words, what makes you discount the threat that climate change poses to organized human life?
