Whatever happens - it happens by design. Your work wasn't quite as important as you believed it to be. Managers have a very good feeling on where to invest and where to divest their personal energy. Either your area or the whole company wasn't set up for success, so they divested while you hung on to a lost cause. It's not your fault but that doesn't matter because you took the blame. Better pay more attention to what's going on around you next time and don't expect your boss to do the important job for you.
