Some people in the comments are missing the point, Neural network can be used to model the rules of the game of life (and the researchers proved it by finding a set of weights that does just that).
But, starting from a random position in weight space, gradient descent fails to find this optimum and requires a sensibly larger network to succed.
Suggesting that the value of the initial weights is primordial (which is in line with the lottery ticket hypothesis)
- rossdavidh 6y agoI think that's true, but the headline implies that there's something special about the Game of Life, when really that's just a handy, widely-known example of a problem to learn. I don't think there's anything particularly unique about the GoL in this regard.
