  Social platform recommendation engines are designed to optimize "revealed preference." I've commented in the past that "revealed preference" is just a new name for exploitation of vice. People's higher goals are often counter to their day-to-day instinctive behaviors. We should find ways to optimize those goals, rather than momentary metrics.
