> Chipmakers such as Macronix, Micron and SK Hynix have recently joined Qualcomm, Samsung, and the SMIC in seeking approval from the U.S. to sell electronic components to Huawei.
> Before the chip ban, Huawei overtook Samsung to become the world's No. 1 smartphone seller with over 200 million units in 2019.
Imagine a world where one Chinese partially state-owned publicly-traded corporation -- SMIC -- is asking permission of a foreign government to do business with another Chinese corporation -- Huawei. Talk about sovereignty!
Compare with one division of Samsung seeking permission (from the same foreign government) to restore the ability to topple another internal division of Samsung.
What a time to be alive!
- londons_explore 6y agoThe interesting bit is not that they are seeking permission, but what will happen if permission is denied. For that reason, I suspect the US will either approve these requests of just delay them infinitely. Some companies would then be smart to do trade as if the request had been accepted. This forces the US's hand into either accepting the request, ignoring the trade, or rejecting the request (causing potential political fallout).
