I once read that code is the what, tests are the why and comments are for jokes. Of course, I don't believe it to that extreme; comments are sometimes handy. But that's the thing: sometimes, sparingly. Over the past few years, if I find myself not understanding something about a piece of code, I first go to the tests to see if it was tested, and the tests help me determine what it's supposed to do more than well enough.
