  It seems like the kind of thing that would tend to help the President get reelected. Americans often get behind a President when they feel attacked, especially if he responds with "strength". Even otherwise liberal elements may support forceful responses to an attack. This is of course a very unusual political situation and it's hard to make predictions, but whatever harm it might do to the President personally, it seems likely to benefit him politically.
