subprocess is far to complicated for casual levels of scripting. We have a handful python-devs here, and everyone is avoiding it for scripts, because it's just so poor designend for this job. Shell is simple and straight forward, and can bring you quite far for most stuff. Only if you start using complex datastructures it makes more sense to use a mature language like python.
