Only if we kill theives and other criminals that take away people's time and energy.
A spammer is steals time and mental energy out of our day. It adds up over time.
Let's say each adult in the US spends 1 minute a day going through spam to make sure nothing important got mixed in. That's 6 hours a year, times 200,000,000 adults. That's 1,200,000,000 man-hours or 50,000,000 man-days, or divided by average life expectancy: 637,000 lives wasted each year by spam.
How many spammers are there? Even if it was 637,000 different spammers, they're each wasting the equivilent of a whole person's life.
Criminals aren't stealing money; they're stealing the time away from a person's life that they spent earning that money.
- Gibbon1 6y agoBut what about facebook then?
- RandomBacon 6y agoThen we find ourselves on a slippery-slope. People choose to waste time on Facebook. Then one could argue, people choose to sift through spam. People choose to use email. People choose to use computers. Etc. At what point does it transition from a choose to a necessity, whereas otherwise a person would waste even more time filling out job applications on paper (do those exist anymore?) or waiting by a landline to receive a message, or waiting at a DMV instead of renewing a DL online.
