- smogcutter 6y agoI honestly had no idea that wasn’t universal. Never thought twice about it.

- cm2012 6y agoSome people outside of NYC think it's rude the first time they hear it! No "please" or "may I" in sight.
- Synaesthesia 6y agoIn South Africa we will often say "hello" and "how are you?" before ordering, no exaggeration.
- runawaybottle 6y agoWho’s got time for all of that?
- gambiting 6y agoSounds like UK - I've heard people use "you're alright mate?" Before just proceeding with the order as normal
- michaelcampbell 6y agoI see/hear that a bit in some British panel shows that I enjoy; the host and sidekick will start with "You alright?" as a general intro phrase.
- test1235 6y agoI like to think of it as the English version of the French 'ca va'. "Alright?" "Alright."
- smogcutter 6y agoTo be fair, the NYC version of that is “how ya doin’?”. You don’t wait for an answer though.
- smogcutter 6y agoHah, and here I thought I only stick out when I ask for cawfee.
- beezle 6y agoI have been often mocked when asking for a cup outside of the metro area! I means how the f else wouldja say it?
- weinzierl 6y agoRelevant lesson from the best teachers you could have for New York slang[1];-) It's the Beastie Boys teaching their Japanese interviewer how to say: "Lemme have a slice of pizza.". It's a funny and entertaining interview despite the interviewer being a bit cringe-worthy. In my opinion the interview is also worth watching, because it's a good lesson for how you treat a dialog partner that is nervous and overwhelmed in a respectful way. Thinking of music and NYC also Kenny Gioia comes to mind. After having watched tons of his Reaper instructional videos I think I dreamt in a thick New York accent;-) [1] https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=D5Pw3OzDkVw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=D5Pw3OzDkVw
- rasz 6y agoThe cringe you are experiencing is due to interviewer not really speaking english.
