I'm a consultant and taught a class one semester in an engineering (not comp. sci.) department because the department head was screwed when someone resigned. Anyway, we had an online service called canvas or something. FUCK THAT SHIT. The online / web based "tools" that are meant to make things easier make your life as an instructor a living hell. The admin overhead on an instructor using online tools is insane. You get bombarded with email, and there is always a problem or excuse with something breaking.
If I were to teach again, it would all be paper based assignments and office hours. 100% analog. I don't have the time to deal with extra admin.
My 2 cents.
- rayhendricks 6y agoI’ve Deferred my grad school applications due to COVID. This is a huge cash-grab by universities and IMO totally criminal. There is no way you can learn like this and I do not want to teach over zoom. Kinda looks like universities think they are too big to lay people off or close. Also charging an 18yo 40k/yr for zoom classes when it’s available for free on Edx is nuts.
- happyjack 6y agoYou made the right move, especially if you are doing graduate school in science (paid). I can't agree more; paying these fees to take Khan academy classes in your parents basement is absurd.
