Tesla Model S Plaid, 0-60 in under 2 seconds
- mywittyname 6y agoThat level of performance is mind boggling. I can't think of a factory car running a sub 9 second quarter mile, and I can't think of a time I've seen a car run that time at a track then drive itself back home (and I spend a lot of friday nights at test-and-tunes), they are towed. A 1:30 at Leguna Seca is also insane. That's Viper ACR / Ferrari 488 GTB / McLaren P1 levels of performance. I'd like to know who their test driver is, because if one of their engineers did that, then the performance is even more insane.
- toomuchtodo 6y agoVehicle range is also somewhere around 520 miles. That’s insane for an EV.
- epmaybe 6y agoI was about to comment that, it seems pretty impressive, that alone makes it pretty compelling if it can actually achieve that in real world use. I'd love to see that kind of range trickle down to the lower priced vehicles, or even other manufacturers. A 200+ mile range Nissan leaf is pretty much instant buy for me.
- torpfactory 6y agoIt’s available: https://insideevs.com/reviews/420126/nissan-leaf-plus-highway-range-test-video/ https://insideevs.com/reviews/420126/nissan-leaf-plus-highwa... But for $43k you could also get a Model 3 SR+...
- Dork1234 6y agoThere generally isn't any place that would allow you to run sub 10 second quarter miles without a roll bar and that was just lowered for the latest generation street cars. I believe they won't even give you a time if you exceed the safety limit. https://www.racepagesdigital.com/ten-flat-nhra-adjusts-roll-bar-requirements-to-10-00-for-2008-newer-street-cars-presented-by-nitto-tire/ https://www.racepagesdigital.com/ten-flat-nhra-adjusts-roll-... German cars use to have a speed limit of 155mph and Porsche even sold factory rollbars for the GT series of cars (Not in US because of --Freedom-- laws). I sure hope Musk is considering safety with these ~5000 lbs rockets.
- jayzalowitz 6y agoIm pretty sure with the weight distro being pretty much all at the bottom of the car its almost impossible to roll outside of an accident involving another car. Apparently the frame is a monster too, so it might qualify there somehow.
- Doxin 6y agoSee this video[1] for a demonstration of how hard it is to roll a tesla. In one of the tests it goes past 90 degrees before rolling back on its wheels. [1] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L24xzJkCGdk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L24xzJkCGdk
- ThePadawan 6y ago> (...) they are towed. For my understanding - do you mean that they're not road legal, or that they're not reliable enough for day-to-day off-track use?
- mywittyname 6y agoThey are road legal. In the US at least, road legal is a pretty low bar to clear. But they usually have drag radials with skinny fronts, stripped interiors and high-stall torque converters. Which combine to make the car really hard to drive on the street.
- wpdev_63 6y agoIt's still kinda unbelievable that the largest and most valued electric car maker in the world is naming their cars from scenes that elon thought was funny.[0] What a time to be alive. [0]:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAWL8ejf2nM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAWL8ejf2nM
- mywittyname 6y agoPop culture sells. I like it specifically because no marketing department would ever okay something like this.
- DuskStar 6y agoDon't forget choosing model names to be S3XY... (Apparently Ford owns the rights to "Model E")
- mhh__ 6y agoThat's because Tesla are massively overvalued relative to what they will most likely achieve. Tesla are not the largest car manufacturer at all - Tesla's market cap is hugely bigger than ford's, but ford's yearly revenue is only a bit smaller than Tesla's market cap
- zalkota 6y agoThe market knows better than you. They aren’t a car company, just like Apple isn’t a phone company.
- bradlys 6y agoI thought under 2s is impossible for street compounds? Still, good numbers. Wouldn’t buy one anyway. I like sound.
- sunstone 6y agoHey just install a growling speaker for sound and you're good to go. That's what they do on the pickup trucks.
- mlindner 6y agoIt's got plenty of sound, just different sound. Personally, I like to be able to talk when I'm setting world record laps and be able to drive the car home afterwards.
- lathiat 6y agoYou can just creep under it but it’s close to the limit (unless you add cold gas thrusters of course). Engineering explained has a couple of really good videos covering the physics and math. Here’s one about how the new roadster can possibly achieve 1.9 seconds. https://youtu.be/9Uca_jNh2M4 https://youtu.be/9Uca_jNh2M4 https://youtu.be/4PRi4B1APj0 https://youtu.be/4PRi4B1APj0
