On the negative side, the internet broke the business model of journalism, by capturing advertising revenue that used to pay journalists salaries.
Once journalism was disrupted, government could be compromised without scrutiny.
Once government was compromised, commercial monopolies such as the ones ISPs enjoy across America could proceed unchallenged, elections could be skewed by outside and elite vectors, and corporations could surveil consumers on a grand scale without regulatory inhibition.
On the positive side, the internet, allied with advances in digital consumer electronics, has enabled great advances in personal expression through video and audio production and sharing, the vast digital commons that is wikipedia, and through WordPress, which is a continuation of the Gutenberg paradigm.
- umvi 6y agoI don't know, journalism seems to have had the same problems plaguing it 200 years ago that it has today, at least according to Jefferson: https://press-pubs.uchicago.edu/founders/documents/amendI_speechs29.html https://press-pubs.uchicago.edu/founders/documents/amendI_sp...

- DiogenesKynikos 6y ago> Perhaps an editor might begin a reformation in some such way as this. divide his paper into 4. chapters, heading the 1st. Truths. 2d. Probabilities. 3d. Possibilities. 4th. Lies. the 1st. chapter would be very short, as it would contain little more than authentic papers, and information from such sources as the editor would be willing to risk his own reputation for their truth. the 2d. would contain what, from a mature consideration of all circumstances, his judgment should conclude to be probably true. this however should rather contain too little than too much. the 3d. & 4th. should be professedly for those readers who would rather have lies for their money than the blank paper they would occupy.
