I discovered late in life (high school IIRC) that you don't have to read a book once.
Like you, today, I will dedicate my first read through to exposure, nothing more ("What don't I know that immediately jumps out at me? What do I immediately understand? What am I struggling with?")
In subsequent read throughs, these questions get answered as I reinforce the learning with cross referencing, exercises and deep thought of the subject matter while drinking tea, sitting on the porch bathing in the sun.
To me learning from books remains powerful. It's a shame that how we learn from books is rarely emphasized.
