Google and Microsoft staff set to join the UK’s first tech trade union
- richliss 6y agoWhen I was younger I genuinely believed unions were a force for good in the UK workforce despite what had happened in the 1970’s with direct USSR engagement, wildcat strikes and Red Robbo. I joined unions at two different employers and both times I found that they were absolutely useless at supporting the staff and were just a place for the local union workers who wanted to get out of working to be paid and be unsackable. The CWU did absolutely nothing to support me when redundancies were happening thankfully I had a manager support me instead out of his goodwill and Unite did absolutely nothing to support me during workplace bullying but had the nerve to get upset when I cancelled my fees and explained why. Add to this their focus on being political over workers needs and they no longer inspire any confidence for me. https://www.cityam.com/union-leaders-their-own-worst-enemy/ https://www.cityam.com/union-leaders-their-own-worst-enemy/

- groinlkng 6y agoYeah I didn't think tech workers needed a union... until basically our entire marketing department got fired! Don't go to work without one
