I've been trying out Rust for a week now and as an experienced programmer, the complexity of the language is overwhelming. That said, you don't need to know all language constructs to get started. In the last week, I've been able to build a simple but useful cross-platform GUI app after reading only the ownership/lifetime section of the Rust book. But yes, it is not for everyone and it certainly isn't a simple language to pick up.
