Right, very few products are entirely new. That's especially true with apple devices which is why I didn't agree that the apple watch is a blue ocean innovation. They are good at taking ideas and making them better. I would argue that the app store became popular because the iphone was already popular due to being the newest product from apple that had built a following with the ipods and keynotes where the journalists where applauding everything Steve Jobs said. It's easy to forget how bad the iphone was when it was first released.
