GTIN is a way to assign unique 12 to 14 digit number to each unique product that is either sold in retail or handled by retail related logistics. The number space is essentially unstructured and only thing that you can reliably glean out of random GTIN is who had assigned that particular number. And you probably see the problem that this system solves everyday without realizing it: the barcodes on almost anything that you can buy at your local supermarket encode GTIN.
