Throughout reading the article I kept wondering why they didn't pursue the obvious solution : build a normal house next to it and move in. They have a nice plot of land and cost of conventional construction in Arkansas is low. They could rent out the stupid underground house as a mushroom farm or bat sanctuary or just fill it with concrete and put a garage on top.
