Well yeah the US had 36k automobile deaths and globally its 1.3 million (that's 3500 per day). You need to accept some level of fatalities as normal.
- oneplane 6y agoNow do the same numbers for aerospace for the sweet 'oops' moment.
- adwww 6y agoThe US has vastly worse automobile deaths than almost any other developed nation, however you divide the numbers. (population, KM travelled, number of vehicles owned...). Probably not the best example...!
- x87678r 6y agoNowhere near the worst. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_traffic-related_death_rate https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_traffic-r...
- adwww 6y agoThanks for the link to confirm what I said. Mexico is ranked 1 better than US for traffic fatalities per capita. America has such huge clout for setting design standards for vehicles, has very large, very well funded law enforcement departments, a reasonably young average age for registered cars. If it wanted, it could smash those fatality figures in not much time at all.
- jasonwatkinspdx 6y agoThey said among developed nations. And they're right. Just compare the population normalized figures between the US and Canada. We have very similar cultures and road conditions, and yet the US is nearly 2x worse.
- triceratops 6y agoC'mon stop bragging, nobody likes a show-off. /s I knew roads in the US were dangerous, I didn't realize they were nearly as dangerous as Bangladesh or Egypt! No slight against those countries in particular but they are comparatively less prosperous (meaning older, less-safe vehicles, more pedestrians), have worse roads, and presumably not as advanced healthcare systems. I'm amazed the US, with all its advantages, does so poorly.
- x87678r 6y agoI think the difference is that US people drive a lot more. I'm guessing most Bangladeshis dont have cars/motorcycles so its hard to die from an accident.
- triceratops 6y agoPlenty of pedestrians and bicyclists die in car accidents too. But you're right, it's a per-capita ranking, not per-unit-distance.
- x87678r 6y agoWow, 4 cars for every 1000 people. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_vehicles_per_capita https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_vehicles_...
- HumblyTossed 6y ago> You need to accept some level of fatalities as normal. No, you don't. You never "accept" it. You always strive to preserve life. When did life stop being precious?
