Apple just took a huge swing at Peloton and at home fitness startups.
Why cycle in place at home with a Peloton instructor, when you can cycle outside with a Fitness+ instructor? Why limit yourself to your stationary Peloton bike at home, when you can use a stationary bike anywhere?
Apple can and probability will beat out Lulu Lemon's Mirror on price using motion capture on an AppleTV smartTV or Ipad.
Only startup that stands a chance is Tonal b/c of their hardware providing value.
- xwdv 6y agoIndoor bikes are more consistently grueling, not everyone has ideal workout terrain for a bicycle. Lot of flat roads.
- cliverani 6y agoI think Peloton's largely upper-middle class target market that live in the suburbs or cities can find solid bike trails using Apple maps. But you're right, it's too early to jump to conclusions.
- Tiktaalik 6y agoGiven the cycling unfriendly design of most NA cities, using a Peloton instead of an outdoor bike ride seems like a sensible safety measure to not get killed by a distracted SUV driver.
- servercobra 6y agoYup, I lived in Chicago only a mile from the Lakeshore Bike Path and almost never used it after a few run ins with distracted drivers and almost being hit. I use my (not Peloton) stationary and Peloton Digital all the time though.
- xwdv 6y agoHigher net worth individuals like the ones you find in the upper middle class also aren't going to be risking their life daily on a bicycle outside just for exercise. You can easily just roll out of bed at 6 AM and jump on a peloton and safely get good exercise everyday, no matter the weather or terrain.
- adrr 6y agoPeople cycle in place because it’s more convenient than going outside. Not everyone lives near bike trails where you can continuously cycle without having to worry about cars and traffic lights. Even on bike trails, speed is limited to 10mph so I don’t how you can do hiit workout and keep it below 10mph.
- wrycoder 6y agoThink slush and wind.

- cliverani 6y agoYou're right. It's the portability of being able to use Fitness+ cycle instructors on any stationary bike not just a Peloton that I think provides the most value. When things get back to normal, you can have the instructor guide you through a workout at a hotel gym or any gym anywhere with a stationary bike.
- matsemann 6y agoAs an avid cyclist, I often sometimes bike indoors because it's easier to get the workout I want with exact wattages and intervals. A wahoo kickr or other direct drive unit + zwift/trainerroad/whatever. Don't think Apple will compete with any of those soon.
- ActorNightly 6y ago>when you can cycle outside with a Fitness+ instructor Please don't do this. Its not safe.
- cliverani 6y agoIt's just literally audio feedback telling to you go faster or slower based on your heart rate. It's no more dangerous than voice navigation while driving.
- matsemann 6y agoUnless it can pair with power sensors for wattage I don't think I could see any cyclists try this. If one's dedicated enough to use a program like this during workout, there are far better existing options.

- ehsankia 6y agoEspecially considering all the competition have to manage by making 30% less money.
- samatman 6y agoI expect Peloton will integrate with Fitness+, and the arrangement will be quite profitable for both parties. I'd guess that the Apple ecosystem is very nearly a strict superset of people who have Pelotons, after all.
