Nice read. The easily-youtubeable documentary (4x 1hr eps) Century of the Self also goes into the psychology of how America (and by extension 'Western' culture) became obsessed with materialism.
- ganzuul 6y agoI keep trying to press my friends into watching it. It should be taught in schools and shouted from the rooftops. Ditch Netflix this evening and watch Century of the Self instead.
- onion2k 6y agoAdam Curtis is a brilliant film maker. "Hypernormalisation" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fny99f8amM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fny99f8amM) and "Bitter Lake" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84P4dzow1Bw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84P4dzow1Bw) are well worth watching too.
- dragonelite 6y agoOoh yeah i found Hypernormalisation quiet een eye opener, my first thought was wtf for conspiracy movie did i just clicked on. But it kinda got me searching and made me end up becoming a casual consumer of geopolitical articles and think tank talks on youtube.
- gwd 6y agoNot sure if this is true of Hypernormalisation, but it is worth pointing out that "It seemed weird but then I looked into it and saw more content along the same lines which convinced me" is the experience of everyone who gets sucked into a conspiracy theory. :-)
- Fnoord 6y agoThe Power Of Nightmares is another multi part documentary from around the time the US successfully invaded Iraq. It was made before the other mentioned documentaries. IIRC these are all freely available on the Internet Archive. Or, they used to be.
- heresie-dabord 6y agoCentury of the Self is worth watching but is not perfect. The last segment loses clarity and becomes mired in UK politics. With that proviso, I recommend the first two segments for anyone who strives not to be a modern idiot.
