Twitter seems to be testing an edit feature
- devenblake 6y ago> It looks like Twitter may finally, at long last, be allowing users to edit their tweets. Users began noticing it Sunday afternoon: If you delete a tweet reply, then try to reply again, the “deleted” text reappears, allowing you to fix any mistakes and re-send it. Hardly an edit feature. And good! I don't want a Donald Trump to tweet "Glad to see my supporters are dismantling the fascist Black Lives Matter movement." and then their PR team changing that to "Love the view!" without there being any proof beyond third-party screenshots. If Twitter added an edit feature without viewable history or changed links for editing content (e.g. twitter.com/tweet versus twitter.com/tweet-edit) it would be pandemonium.
- jdashg 6y agoNo one asking for an edit feature wants the strawman version, and it's intellectually disrespectful to even bring up such a well-trodden point.
- sincerely 6y agoDeleting a tweet and reposting with corrections is so far away from "edit" that I don't understand what the people asking for an edit feature actually want
- nefitty 6y agoI can imagine solemnly written tweets with typos going unnoticed by the author for hours or days, if ever noticed. This is especially frustrating once a tweet has gained traction, because deleting and reposting means you lose all the engagement of the original post. It reminds me of Larry David’s Beloved Aunt incident. Larry paid for an obit in the newspaper to say that the deceased person was a, “devoted sister, beloved aunt”. There was a typo in the word “aunt”... Anyways, the newspaper was printed and distributed and there was no feasible way for the message to be corrected. It seems strange that that same limitation is, arguably, unnecessarily and arbitrarily enforced on a digital platform.
- devenblake 6y agoI've never yet seen someone tread that point, nor do I think that's necessarily a strawman. In fact, the implication of my comment was that a full edit history (e.g. click the timestamp and see all of the edits in chronological order) would address all of my concerns.
- david90 6y agoLooks like it's just cached text in the text field.
