As a pirate, the more you can share information, the better off society is. Without patents you would have a much faster innovation cycle. The inventor could make some money by being first to market but couldn't milk it for 20 years. They would have to go back and innovate again. At the same time, other people would be innovating on what they released. I think the makers would still make without patents. I know that I do.
