I like to ask the following question: What do we know about reality that we didn't know before the work of these HEP theorists? This is not rhetorical. There are some works for which there is a concrete positive answer (which might not be simple). But there is much more for which the answer is simply nothing. I left the field years ago because it was clear that most of the work being done is not physics.
