The article put in so much effort in all the wrong ways. Things were moving all over the place and there was no consistency between sections. I had to retrain myself every time I read another paragraph.
The only interesting parts for me were the interactive elements. This is the same article except much easier to read: https://readymag.com/designs/1961839/ https://readymag.com/designs/1961839/
For me, there are only 2 things that would make an article better to read.
1. Better, more concise writing.
2. Interactivity
And if the goal is read through rate then perhaps this method will work (if only because people are more likely to scroll blindly through an article to see all the animations). But if the goal is education then sometimes boredom is what's needed.

- occamrazor 6y agoThis version is much better indeed, with “boring” but ergonomic fonts, images, and typography. How did you figure out the URL?
- xmprt 6y agoI clicked around their page and looked at some of the templates they were selling.
- wodenokoto 6y agoFor content where readers arrive from other web properties, it also helps to be frank and upfront about what the theme and content of the article is. TFA is called “read me”, which is a term many technical people connect with documentation. It starts of talking about Reader retention on the web and changes into a deep dive of what typography is and the history of web and digital typography. Of course you are going to lose readers who expects an article about documentation, or readers who think this is a meta article about web content. For content, where readers mostly come from within the web property, you can be more certain that readers will read the article because they trust the sender, not because the theme interest them and for such a medium, I think there is more room to play with introduction and themes.
