Besides disabling PMTU Discovery by allowing fragmentation with `sysctl net.ipv4.ip_no_pmtu_disc=1` the Linux kernel also has a setting to enable dynamic MTU probing at the TCP layer (PLPMTU, RFC4821) `echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_mtu_probing`.
