I seriously doubt that.
Apple hardware has always been more about being a status symbol then utility.
To the average Apple user it's just not cool enough if it isn't availble on Apple hardware.
Even looking back I'm still surprised how effectively Apple polarized people into fans vs haters after steve jobs rejoined back then...
- coldtea 6y ago>Apple hardware has always been more about being a status symbol then utility. Citation needed. Even Linus Torvalds had used several pieces of Apple hardware (iBook, G5, Macbook Air)... Perhaps he was in search of "status" too?
- DennisAleynikov 6y agothere are a few nerds here and there that actually prefer the weird Unix/BSD that Mac OS X is based on but theres no way Linus Torvalds is using the normie focused MacOS Big Sur and the current environment Apple used to support freedom in programming and use of the computer. That has not been the case anytime recently, they've taken the prison system of iOS and slowly implemented it on 'macOS'
- jolux 6y agoAnd left switches for you to turn all of it off, should you choose…
- coldtea 6y ago>there are a few nerds here and there that actually prefer the weird Unix/BSD that Mac OS X is based on macOS as well as Apple hardware is not just used by "a few nerds here and there". It's used by a very good chunk of devs in any conference (be it Apple, Rails, JS, Python, Data science, whatever), and by a majority of speakers in said conferences (so tons of top tier "nerds" - your words). >there are a few nerds here and there that actually prefer the weird Unix/BSD that Mac OS X is based on but theres no way Linus Torvalds is using the normie focused MacOS Big Sur and the current environment He is not, he used Linux on his G5 and Macbook Air, and used macOS (of yore) on his iBook (on which he wrote his autobiography, in MS Word nonetheless). But the comment I replied to was that "Apple hardware has always been more about being a status symbol then utility". This spins it to the software. Did Linus need Apple hardware as a status symbol? Because in his own words, he had e.g. praised the Macbook Air as a great example of a sturdy, small, and silent laptop, that no PC maker compete with (at least at the time he used it). Also the term "normies" is beyond immature. What is this, 4chan?

- DennisAleynikov 6y agowhoa there by normies I meant people outside of the hackernews crowd, and while I agree with Linus on Apple's hardware being way sturdier back in the day this was a fleeting era for apple. He does run linux on the macbook so my point was just that current apple is not something he stands by nor would buy for status/reliability reasons as Thinkpads and many other durable machines now exist. The new macOS Big Sur is very importantly focused on "the average intellect user" that ends up on iOS and iPad and trying to have the same system of permission popups and touch friendly UI's as well as restrictions to application runtimes going as extreme as break many devtools. While there will be fixes one day for all this and likely a second golden age for apple, unless you are stuck video editing with final cut and your workflow does not allow you to change OS theres few things left for the "era of pro users that got mac for work" I'm still likely to buy the arm macs they should be releasing here soon cuz I do want to be on the front lines of the demise of Intel and I already have a Surface Pro X but the market of american programmers with macbooks is fading and fast, hopefully for good, as iOS development continues to move away from being MacOS exclusive.
- butterisgood 6y agoI doubt you know what you’re talking about. It’s never been about a status symbol for me. I don’t regret switching to Apple 20 years ago and the very little amount of time I spend fighting the OS to do what I need it to on a daily basis. If anything, I have to put up with schmucks telling me I bought apple hardware for looks more than I enjoy any sort of status symbol for owning it.
- jowsie 6y agoYou might have been the average apple user 20 years ago, but times have changed.
- butterisgood 6y agoMy point is your perception is YOUR problem - not those who use something for their own benefit. Also fuck your opinion of anyone using A Mac. Seriously. Fuck off.
- dang 6y agoWhoa. This kind of comment isn't cool here. If you wouldn't mind reviewing https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html and sticking to the rules when posting here, we'd be grateful.

- ActorNightly 6y agoWhile Mac computers aren't bad, its generally a consensus that they are not worth the price for any tangible thing (same performance/functionality and the ability to repair the computer easily can be had for lower cost). This is also compounded by the recent bloat in Catalina with permissions, and continuous locking down of Apple to the point where you can't run a lot of free software on it (like VMWare Player) that you can on other computers. There is definitely an aspect of aesthetics when it comes to why people purchase this, so the guy you are replying to is kinda correct.
- xnyan 6y agoI have the option of any laptop I want at my job and I picked a nice windows laptop over a MacBook Pro and regularly get made fun of for it - whatever, could care less. I’m not saying you’re wrong, but choosing tech for fashion doesn’t describe me at all. I actually quite dislike much of modern apple and their practices and wish I could do everything that I want with my hardware. My problem is that Apple’s mobile silicon is better (for me) than anything I can get running android. The A13 alone keeps me buying Apple mobile hardware, there’s no real competition at the high end for performance.
- t-writescode 6y agoThe only reason I use an iPhone is privacy concerns. I’m sure there are many like me. Frankly, with Apple’s behavior lately, it’s becoming a bit of a hard sell. Anticompetitive behavior for privacy is a trade I’ll only take for so long, and depending on court results, they may be losing a customer.
