Italy has a digital identity provider (SPID) and certified email (PEC, which is basically email + digital identity) and only government websites, bank and insurrances use it. It is much better than the alternative in the UK, where you either visit a branch in person or send a copy of your ID (passport or driving licence) together with proof of address (a bank statement), hoping they won't leak the documents at some point.
