This is quite a lot of vitamin D?
> I think the best way to take action on these findings is to maintain 25(OH)D in 30-40 ng/mL.
Also what does this mean in layman's terms?
- ht85 6y agoHe gives possible dosages at the bottom of the article, but this should obviously be done with medical supervision, at least to measure initial levels.
- weavie 6y agoAh thanks I missed that. (It was too close to the 'share this' section for my eyes to wander down there!)
- cmrx64 6y agothere’s an app called dminder that will help you reach an estimated level, given dietary intake plus location and estimates of sun exposure.
- lambdaba 6y agoThat's a normal one-time dose for correcting a deficiency, I've heard of much larger doses, even 50K IU daily for months. 30-40 ng/mL is the suitable level, on the mid-range, not even a high level (optimal levels might be even higher)
- himinlomax 6y agoNote that one study showed that small, daily doses (or medium, weekly doses) had significant preventive effect against respiratory infections, whereas a large monthly dose had no such effect.
- lambdaba 6y agoThis might be both because vitamin D has low oral absorption, especially in high doses, and that staggering is necessary, and that some systemic effects take time to manifest.
- JanSt 6y ago30 min in midday sun can produce 10.000-20.000 IU. It's big but not outlandish. One time mega-dose safety is established at 10.000 IU/kg for infants and toddlers [1] [1] https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19506025/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19506025/
- Filligree 6y agoNote, before you assume this means high doses are always safe: Synthesis of vitamin D will stop once your body thinks you have enough. It isn't capable of ceasing absorption through the digestive system in the same way. That said, constant supplementation of a medium dose -- say, 8000-1000 IUs daily -- should be mostly safe, and probably a good idea.
- neuronic 6y agoThe body regulates vitamin D production from sunlight exposure. It cannot regulate orally taken vitamin D because by the time you absorb the supplemented vitamin D you have surpassed the regulation step. You cannot get too much vitamin D from sunlight but you sure as hell can overdose by taking it orally.
- JanSt 6y agoI should have probably been more precise but that is what I tried to say: one time mega doses are safe and your body is able to produce big quantities even through short sun exposure. That doesn't take from the fact that you shouldn't take those mega-doses multiple times in short course.
