I think fundamentally it seems very difficult to even send a message to someone. If you have an IM2000 server and you would like to send a message to someone on another IM2000 server: how? They would have to subscribe to your IM2000 server, but how would they know that unless you told them via... what? Not via IM2000, certainly, because that's what you're trying to figure out in the first place!
