- nkrisc 6y agoSpeaking of, I always wished the Android messaging app could just parse those messages and show the little like icon or whatever on the last matching message I sent.

- giancarlostoro 6y agoWhat's funny to me is in Signal you can react to messages, but it still doesn't interpret iOS messages as such...

- bredren 6y agoWasn’t it originally going to be an open protocol, though? I thought the decision to lock it to iOS devices came later.
- kalleboo 6y agoI think that was only FaceTime
- eyesee 6y agoThat was FaceTime.
- guptaneil 6y agoAs others noted, that was FaceTime and the reason for changing directions was because they lost a lawsuit to a patent troll[0], forcing them to switch from P2P to routing calls through their servers. 0: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20236114 https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20236114
- Andrew_nenakhov 6y agoThis is also a feature that prevents every iOS device owner I know from ever using iMessage.
- vbezhenar 6y agoFor me iMessage incompatibility drives me to use Whatsapp, as none of my friends are not using iPhone and not going to use it in the future.
- xyst 6y agoThis was never the original intention. Back in 2010 WWDC, Jobs presented FaceTime/iMessage as a messaging platform for all phones. Unfortunately, patent trolls killed this idea and iMessage became a closed wall for iPhones. https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-20236114 https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-20236114 If you want to get mad, get angry at our outdated and abused patent system. EDIT: 2010 WWDC keynote (1:37:01) where Jobs mentions open sourcing FT as open source protocol - https://youtu.be/UjUd0VSM2RA https://youtu.be/UjUd0VSM2RA
- dingaling 6y agoI don't think the highest market-cap company on Earth would have much difficulty in buying-out the patent owner.
- buzzerbetrayed 6y agoWow that bbc article was frustrating to read. The patent system needs a serious rework.
