I would direct you to the excellent _Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire_.
- AlotOfReading 6y agoAre you referring to Gibbon's work? It's approaching 250 years old and every year of that shows. The most it's useful for is historiography and as a stellar example of 18th century writing. Please don't use it as a history book. The Askhistorians book list offers more modern alternatives [1] and I'm sure a classicist would have even more up-to-date references.
