I am a professional Scala developer and I can count the number of times where I have created or used shared mutable in the last two years on one hand. No one forces you to do it and the Scala community has developed excellent tools to mitigate these problems when using Java libraries. Same for OS threads. We use green threads in Scala for a long time now, there is a great amount of library support.
