Its pretty ridiculous that web services still allow you to sign up without verifying your email.
- frabcus 6y agoIt’s even more ridiculous that it is 2020 and the only method to get a verified email is by sending an email with a link. There should be a standardised protocol and flow which makes the experience much better for both users and developers.
- paxys 6y agoYeah, and we could call this protocol SMTP and HTTP
- eythian 6y agoTechnically there is, I think SMTP has 'VRFY' or similar to check if an email address exists. However I recall reading (like, over a decade ago) that it's often not supported as it makes it easier for spammers to validate real email addresses.
- yreg 6y agoiTunes, LastPass, Dashlane, Yahoo, Microsoft other Gmail accounts definitely require verification. Perhaps the author collected those accounts 12 years ago when it hasn't been the case? Or does he click on the verification links?
- Nextgrid 6y ago> still allow you We're actually moving in the opposite direction now. A lot of services nowadays became less strict in what they require to open an account (for the sake of growth and engagement) compared to a decade ago.
