Even insurance doesn’t protect against this. Case in point: family member battling cancer had over $50K in costs not covered by insurance. Not to mention costs that they had to pay initially until the insurance company accepted the claim. (They usually had a few back and forth a where the insurance co would initially refuse to pay)
