If you can detect them as spammers, instead of banning them, shadow ban them, making their posts invisible to others, and slow down the servers response for them.
There is also alternatives to recaptcha, that might be more ethical, for example https://www.phpcaptcha.org/ https://www.phpcaptcha.org/ - there are some image matching ones too, but I don't know any specific ones.
- aww_dang 6y agoPerhaps embed some recursive/infinite XSL in an iframe or data src attribute. There are also ways to create memory intensive HTML documents. This will cripple their Selenium or other headless browser instance.
