Some students are smarter than others – and that’s okay
- PaulHoule 6y agoThe evil truth behind the movement against IQ tests is that the legacy students who can't test their way out of a paper bag at Harvard funded Stephen Jay Gould to publicize the idea that we have to ban I.Q. tests because black people did worse than white people on I.Q. tests. (Actually, anybody living close to traffic in the mid 1900's did poorly on I.Q. tests thanks to tetraethyl lead. Being a leadhead can knock 13 points off the score, turn you into a Trump Voter, ... The problem is so bad we should have started disenfranchising leadheads 30 years ago.) In reality the process of getting into Harvard is going to be more classist, discriminatory, racist and whatever than any IQ test is going to be. In the real world, wealthy people, Asians, and Whites will fight to get their kids more resources. Sure, test prep helps, but at least as many rich kids are "dumb as a post" and won't benefit. When kids are assigned to gifted programs based on standardized tests as opposed to the "unstructured" methods that make sure the powerful can win without explaining exactly how, poor people and black people go from 0% to a more representative proportional overnight.
- fgrty 6y agoWhy are they weeding out math and compsci students using calculus? The subject, as it's designed (at least in the US), has very little to do with what the students are expected to see, learn and pass as math/compsci majors. They are denying the students the taste of their chosen major by doing this bullshit. Personally, I am glad I discovered discrete math in time. Turns out, I love math, not the inane subject called "calculus". That's like weeding out English majors by having them pass a course called "folk singing and dancing" where you must passably sing and dance to not be weeded out. Stupid.
